Heavy Rain and Flash Flood Warning for Northern and Northeastern Thailand

Heavy rain is expected to hit the North and Northeast regions of Thailand from August 14 to 18, 2025, with a high risk of flash floods, particularly in areas near hills, lowlands, and riverbanks.

The Thai Meteorological Department has reported that a monsoon trough extends across the North and Northeast, combined with a strengthening southwest monsoon affecting much of Thailand. This leads to widespread heavy rain, with isolated very heavy rains especially in the North and Northeast.

Residents in these regions should stay alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall and possible flooding. Travelers need to exercise caution regarding travel plans and conditions due to the rapidly changing conditions and potential travel disruptions from flooding or hazardous road conditions.

In the North, fairly widespread thundershowers with isolated heavy to very heavy rain are expected in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun. Strong southwest winds may produce waves of 2-3 meters in the upper Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, and mariners are advised to avoid traveling during storms.

In the Northeast, the thundershowers include Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin, and Sisaket.

The public is advised to stay alert for potential flooding and hazardous travel conditions. Marine vessels in the Andaman Sea and Gulf are advised to proceed with caution and avoid sailing during thunderstorms.

Central Thailand experiences scattered thundershowers with isolated heavy rain in Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Lopburi, Saraburi, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Songkhram, and Samut Sakhon.

Minimum temperature in the East is expected to be between 24-26°C, and maximum temperatures between 31-34°C. In the South, minimum temperature is expected to be between 23-25°C, and maximum temperatures between 32-35°C. Minimum temperature in the North is expected to be between 22-25 degrees Celsius, and maximum temperatures between 28-34°C. Minimum temperature in Bangkok is expected to be between 24-26°C, and maximum temperatures between 32-34°C.

In summary, the current weather situation entails a significant threat of heavy rain and flash flooding in Northern and Northeastern Thailand, necessitating caution for residents and travelers, with particular care in flood-prone locations and during maritime travel.

  • Despite the pleasant weather conditions in the East and South of Thailand, the Northern and Northeastern regions face an increased risk of sport being disrupted due to heavy rain and possible flash floods.
  • Travelers are advised to consider the weather conditions before making travel plans to Thailand, especially to the North and Northeast, where the heavy rain, thundershowers, and potential flooding could impact tourist activities such as travel and sightseeing.
