Intense monsoon rainfall warning issued for northern Thailand

The monsoon season is in full swing across Thailand, with a persistent monsoon trough settling over the North, upper Central, and Northeast regions. This weather setup, combined with a moderate southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, is generating widespread rain, with isolated very heavy rainfall in various parts of the country.

The ongoing monsoon has prompted authorities to issue flood warnings and advisories for low-lying and foothill areas in Thailand. Heavy to very heavy rains, with a risk of flash floods and water overflows, are expected, especially in the northern, northeastern, eastern, and southern (west coast) regions. Areas prone to sudden flooding and forest runoff, particularly those near waterways, are at a higher risk.

The weather advisory covers 36 to 38 provinces, including Bangkok. Residents in these areas, particularly those living in low-lying and foothill regions, are urged to remain vigilant due to the risk of sudden flooding and runoff from hills.

Strong winds are causing rough marine conditions, with waves 2-3 meters high in the upper Andaman Sea and above 3 meters in thunderstorm areas. Waves in the Gulf of Thailand and lower Andaman Sea range from 1 to 2 meters, rising in storms. Boaters are advised to avoid stormy areas.

The monsoon trough is expected to move northward by August 19-20, leading to less widespread rain, but until then, heavy and localized very heavy rains remain likely.

Residents in affected areas are advised to stay alert for potential flash floods, overflowing rivers, and landslides, particularly in foothill and low-lying areas. It is essential to monitor official updates and prepare for flooding events.

In summary, strong caution is advised for residents in low-lying and foothill regions due to persistent heavy rains from the monsoon trough causing flash floods and potential water accumulations, especially between August 15–18, 2025. Stay safe and prepared during this monsoon season.

Sport activities in the affected regions should be postponed or cancelled due to the heavy rains and potential floods during the monsoon season in Thailand.

The monsoon weather and climate-change influenced rain patterns have heightened the importance of environmental-science education in Thai schools, emphasizing the need to understand and prepare for extreme weather events.
