Heavy Monsoon Rain Continues to Affect Mumbai

Mumbai is currently experiencing heavy rainfall with continued wet conditions expected for the next several days, driven by ongoing monsoon activity and influenced by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.

From August 25 to August 27, Mumbai has been facing heavy rains with some isolated very heavy rainfall events, causing waterlogging and traffic problems. On August 25 alone, very heavy rains caused extensive disruptions, and heavy rain continued on August 26 and 27.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for Mumbai and surrounding areas, forecasting moderate to heavy rain and the risk of waterlogging and travel disruptions through the week. The forecast for August 28 warns of moderate rain, but isolated pockets of heavy rainfall may still occur, and rains may continue at various intensities through the weekend.

Residents in Mumbai and suburbs are advised to remain cautious of travel delays and waterlogging, keep updated with official weather alerts, and prepare for continued monsoon rain over the next week.

The city of Mumbai received 177 mm of rain within 6-8 hours, causing road flooding throughout the city. Roads turned into streams, causing delays and disruptions in suburban trains, local road traffic, and Metro (BEST) services. Some areas, such as Andheri Subway, Lokhandwala Complex, and Chembur, experienced severe waterlogging, severely impacting pedestrian and vehicle movement.

In response to the heavy rainfall, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has not announced any new holidays or cancellations for schools and colleges. However, the Commissioner of Police commended the Matunga Police team for their prompt action during a crisis, successfully rescuing everyone from a stranded school bus through knee-deep floodwater.

The IMD continues to warn of heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and nearby districts. The seasonal totals at Colaba and Santacruz observatories have surpassed 1,000 mm and are expected to rise further. The IMD issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and nearby districts, warning of continued heavy showers.

As Mumbai braces for more rain this week, staying informed, cautious, and indoors is advised to ensure safety during the ongoing monsoon season.
