Intense Israeli bombardment results in the death of 79 individuals and injures 163 more in Gaza on a single day

In Gaza on May 28, 2025, a World Food Programme warehouse was stormed by displaced Palestinians, who were faced with a critical shortage of food aid. These incidents highlight the urgent need for a significant increase in food aid in Gaza to prevent further humanitarian disasters.

According to reports from the Gaza Ministry of Health, 79 Palestinians were killed, and 163 others injured due to Israeli military operations over the past 24 hours. The majority of the casualties occurred in airstrikes during the early hours of May 28. More than 60 Palestinian civilians were killed in air raids since dawn alone, while another person died during a chaotic food distribution in southern Gaza on Tuesday. A Palestinian was also killed in Jabalia, shot in the chest by an Israeli quadcopter drone.

The World Food Programme has issued a warning emphasizing that Gaza is on the brink of further humanitarian catastrophe, necessitating an increase in food aid. The current blockade and restrictions on essential supplies have resulted in widespread food insecurity, with approximately 450,000 people—around a quarter of Gaza's population—currently facing catastrophic hunger. The entire population of Gaza is experiencing acute food insecurity, and the situation has the potential to worsen significantly if aid is not provided immediately.

The escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza can be attributed to several factors, including the deliberate withholding of aid, food shortages, deteriorating sanitation and water access, and the blockade and aid restrictions. The lack of clean water and sanitation is further compounding the health crisis that has already affected numerous children and mothers, with projections indicating that up to 71,000 children under five will require urgent treatment if the current situation continues.

It remains unclear whether recent negotiations between Israel and Hamas concerning the opening of humanitarian corridors or the establishment of a ceasefire with the aim of expanding food aid have led to any significant breakthroughs. The United Nations and partner organizations are urgently calling for unimpeded access to deliver pre-positioned food and medical supplies in Gaza.

Humanitarian actors are also focusing on accountability and protection, ensuring that aid distribution is delivered with dignity and respect, and urging the international community to pressure for the removal of barriers to humanitarian access.
