Intense Israeli Bombarding in Gaza: Death Toll Climbs to 40 in Nuseirat; Battles Persist in Jabalia and Rafah
Title: Tragic Attack in Nuseirat Refugee Camp: Over 40 Killed in Israeli Strike
In the middle of intensifying conflicts, an Israeli airstrike on the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza on Monday night has claimed the lives of at least 40 individuals, including children.
The devastating attack targeted a three-story house of the Karaja family in Nuseirat camp, which was sheltering approximately 100 displaced Palestinians. Among the displaced were families recently forced out of Rafah in southern Gaza, where Israel had been threatening a massive ground invasion.
For several hours, dozens of victims were trapped under the rubble of the destroyed building. The tragic toll could rise further as civil defence teams continue their efforts to rummage through the debris on Tuesday.

The attacked building was completely destroyed, as reported by Al Jazeera.
The Nuseirat refugee camp is home to 85,409 registered Palestinian refugees by the United Nations, according to the 2023 data. The actual population is believed to be significantly higher.
Established in 1948 following the tragic displacement of over 750,000 Palestinians during the Nakba (catastrophe), the Nuseirat refugee camp remains a symbol of unresolved tensions.
Conflict Escalation
Another Gaza refugee camp, Jabalia in the north, was heavily bombarded by Israeli forces on Tuesday. Medical sources stated that several civilians were killed and wounded in the Tal al-Zaatar area of the camp, as well as in UN-run schools.
Israel's military claimed it expanded activities in Jabalia camp, where fighting between Israeli troops and Palestinian fighters has been fierce. Al Jazeera reported that Israeli tanks, bulldozers, and armored vehicles surrounded at least three UNRWA facilities in the camp, which had been serving as evacuation centers for displaced Palestinian families in northern Gaza.
In a series of updates, Hamas reported killing seven soldiers in close-quarters combat and damaging 12 Israeli military armored vehicles, including tanks, with bombs and missiles. However, these claims could not be independently confirmed.
Fleeing Rafah
Elsewhere in Gaza, at least three people were killed and nine wounded after Israeli artillery targeted the Zaytoun neighborhood in central Gaza. In Rafah, Israeli tanks advanced deeper into eastern areas, entering the neighborhoods of al-Jneina, al-Salam, and al-Brazil.
ISHM, the UN's Palestinian refugee agency, estimates that nearly 450,000 people have fled Rafah since Israeli operations started on May 6. The agency emphasized the deteriorating situation facing these individuals, with constant exhaustion, hunger, and fear.
As the death toll of Palestinians killed in the Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023, reached 35,173 on Tuesday, the need for an immediate ceasefire is increasingly urgent. With the ongoing violence and no clear signs of ceasefire negotiations progressing, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza — particularly in refugee camps like Nuseirat and Jabalia — continues to worsen.
