Israel's military has broken the two-month truce with Hamas, launching aggressive attacks on the Gaza Strip, claiming the lives of over 50 civilians and injuring many more. The decision to resume violent actions was reportedly made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz following Hamas's alleged repeated neglect of hostage releases and rejection of peace talks.
The escalation comes after the ceasefire had been holding since the beginning of the year. However, neither Israel nor Hamas have been able to come to an agreement on the terms for an extension of the truce. Hamas has publicly accused Netanyahu's government of choosing violence over diplomacy, risking the lives of innocent hostages in the process.
It has been suggested that US President Donald Trump was informed in advance of the Israeli assault. After a warning issued by Trump on his Truth Social platform two weeks ago, the Hamas was urged to promptly release all Israeli hostages and return the remains of murdered Israelis. With this latest turn, Israel's armed forces declared that they would strengthen their military presence in the Gaza Strip.
During a six-week ceasefire, hostilities had still occurred sporadically in the Gaza Strip despite the peace agreement. According to Israeli intelligence, Hamas and other extremist groups continued to hold 24 hostages and the remains of 35 abductees.
Hamas's attack on Israel in October 2023 had resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people and the capture of over 250 hostages. Between combatants and civilians, the conflict has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 48,500 people in the Gaza Strip, with over 20,000 terrorists confirmed dead by Israel.
Insights:- The resumption of Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip started after the breakdown of peace talks regarding the hostage release and ceasefire extension.- The conflict has caused significant damage and taken a heavy toll on the lives of civilians in the Gaza Strip, with over 500 deaths reported since the renewed attacks began.- The Houthi rebels from Yemen have also become involved in the conflict by launching missiles at Israel and US naval assets in the Red Sea, with the US responding with airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.

The Commission has also been consulted on the draft budget, as the situation in the Gaza Strip intensifies following Israel's resumption of military operations. The Defense Minister, Israel Katz, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed on the aggressive attacks, claiming they were due to Hamas's alleged neglect of hostage releases and rejection of peace talks. Ceasefire efforts between Israel and Hamas have failed, with no agreement reached on an extension.
