Palestinian Civil Defense Reports Over 50 Dead in Israeli Attacks in Gaza Strip

The latest civil defense reports in the Gaza Strip indicate over 50 fatalities due to Israeli attacks. Among the casualties, at least 19 people were killed in an aerial assault on a residential building in Jabalia, according to Mahmud Bassal, who spoke to AFP.

The targeted school building, initially a shelter for displaced individuals, was later confirmed to have hosted "top-tier terrorists" by the Israeli military, according to their statements.

These recent attacks mark a resumption of Israeli operations in the Gaza Strip, which began on March 18, ending a two-month-long ceasefire. Over the weekend, more than 30 people, including children, lost their lives in these attacks, according to Palestinian authorities.

The current conflict between Israel and Hamas, which started with a large-scale Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, has resulted in over 1200 fatalities, according to Israeli reports, and approximately 251 people taken hostage. As of now, 57 hostages remain in the hands of the Islamists, with 34 already reported dead by the Israeli army.

Israeli military operations, condensed mainly in Gaza, have expanded since April, following the announcement of a major expansion by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz. The intensified clashes resulted in extensive airstrikes, causing widespread casualties and displacement among Palestinian civilians.

The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip continues, with the UN reporting 90 trucks of humanitarian aid having entered the region through Kerem Shalom crossing, ending an 11-week blockade. However, the aid remains insufficient for the population's needs.

The trajectory of the conflict, characterized by frequent air and ground attacks, significant casualties, and territorial gains by Israeli forces, continues into May 2025. Despite ongoing efforts to deliver aid, the situation in Gaza remains dire.
