Intense Heat Wave in the Western Hemisphere: Temperatures projected to peak at 38 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday

Baden-Württemberg Braces for Scorching Temperatures and Potential Storms

Baden-Württemberg, Germany, is currently navigating a transition in its weather conditions, as the recent heatwave subsides and gives way to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

Last week, temperatures peaked at around 35.4°C near the French border, prompting heat warnings from the German Weather Service (DWD) [^3^][^5^]. However, since mid-August, thunderstorms and rain have become prevalent, helping to alleviate the oppressive heat.

On Thursday, temperatures are predicted to reach up to 38 degrees in parts of North Baden, particularly in southern Breisgau, Lake Constance, the Allgäu, the entire Rhine Valley from Karlsruhe to Mannheim, the Rhine-Neckar region, and the Stuttgart area [^4^].

Despite the incoming rain, sweltering nights are expected in many parts of Baden-Württemberg. Urban areas, with their dense buildings, tend to heat up strongly during the day and cool down less at night [^6^].

The DWD is still warning of severe heat stress up to an altitude of 800 meters, and the heat is expected to continue impacting vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly [^7^].

Looking ahead to the weekend, the DWD forecasts summer temperatures around 30 degrees, not as hot as earlier in the week. Local thunderstorms are also possible towards the weekend [^8^].

Residents of Baden-Württemberg can expect temperatures to rise to 31 to 36 degrees on Tuesday, with plenty of sunshine. However, a weak cold front could reach southwestern Germany on Friday, bringing isolated showers and thunderstorms [^1^].

Excluded from the heat warning are parts of the east and northeast of Baden-Württemberg, as well as higher elevations of the Swabian Alb [^3^]. For the weekend, the DWD expects temperatures to remain around 30 degrees, offering some respite from the intense heatwave that gripped the region earlier in the month [^2^].

  • Despite the upcoming rain, city dwellers in Baden-Württemberg might still experience sweltering nights due to urban heating effects, as reported by the DWD weather-forecasting.
