Intense Heat Wave ConcludesThis Weekend With Rolling Thunderstorms
Sizzling Summer Weekend: Thunderstorms Cap Off Heat Wave in Germany
Get ready for some serious heat this weekend, Germany! While the sun will be shining bright and blue, temperatures are set to soar up to a toasty 37°C, only to drop just as quickly as they rose, accompanied by thunderstorms.
The last few days have been blissful in Germany, with clear skies, endless sunshine, and temperatures that are just right - not too hot, not too cold. But King Sol played a quick trick, sliding the Spanish heatwave all the way up from France, with Germany the next stop.
On Saturday, the official start of summer and the longest day of the year, temperatures in the north will climb to a comfortable 26°C, but the southern west can brace for a sweltering 33°C. The coasts will offer some relief, with a high of 23°C.
Insight Scorching Summer Ozone levels have been unusually high for the season, potentially causing coughs and headaches. The hottest day of the year is taking center stage, ready to break the previous record of 35.5°C set on June 14 in Kitzingen. Temperatures of 30 to 34°C are likely on Sunday, with areas along the Rhine experiencing 35 to 37°C. The current 2025 top value will be dethroned. However, the record of 39.6°C set on June 30, 2019, in Bernburg on the Saale remains safe for now.
Sunshine Overload Get ready for a sunshine marathon! From morning till late evening, you'll be under the warm embrace of the sun. These will be the longest sunny days of the year, with up to 16 hours of sunshine possible. But by the afternoon, clouds will roll in from the west and northwest, and the first thunderstorms may rumble in.
More Trouble Ahead By Monday, a low-pressure system will move in from the west, pushing the heat towards the east and southeast. When the warm air meets the cool, moist air, it'll create a spectacle - severe thunderstorms, locally. While we can't pinpoint exact regions, Upper Bavaria could be in the hot seat. Expect hail, ragey winds, buckets of rain, and the whole nine yards.
In a best-case scenario, only showers will fall, or there'll be twinkling lightning and thunder without the stormy side effects. Once the heatwave clears, it will be a delightful 19°C in the north, and a sultry 30°C in the southeast. The heatwave should linger through Tuesday and Wednesday, only to gradually return with a vengeance.

Extra Thunder-prone Regions Southern Germany, particularly Upper Bavaria, is expected to experience the brunt of these thunderstorms, due to factors such as high temperatures, elevated dewpoints, and a synoptic setup conducive to thunderstorm formation. Supercell thunderstorms, known for their severity, may also form in Upper Bavaria, potentially bringing giant hail, flash flooding, and destructive winds. Other parts of Central Europe may also experience convective activity.
- As the heat wave intensifies, Upper Bavaria in southern Germany becomes vulnerable to extreme weather events, with the possibility of supercell thunderstorms developing, bringing hail, flash flooding, and destructive winds.
- By Monday, the heat wave in Germany is set to transition into a series of thunderstorms, particularly in Upper Bavaria, where the synoptic setup favors thunderstorm formation, potentially culminating in severe weather conditions.
