Heatwave Alert in Continental Portugal: Stay Safe During the Upcoming Hot Weekend

A heatwave is expected to hit most weather stations in continental Portugal this weekend, with temperatures soaring to potentially dangerous levels. The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued yellow and orange alerts for all 18 districts, warning citizens to take necessary precautions until 6:00 pm on Saturday.

The scorching heat is predicted to reach up to 43°C in some inland districts, with Évora forecasted to hit 40°C. To stay safe, the IPMA advises citizens to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, seek shade or cool environments, and pay special attention to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with health conditions.

The Alentejo interior is expected to see temperatures ranging between 41°C and 44°C, while the district of Faro will not exceed 40°C on Sunday. However, temperatures in the district of Santarem are predicted to be exceptionally high, with a potential peak of 44°C on Sunday. The district of Aveiro, on the other hand, will see temperatures as low as 28°C on Sunday.

The meteorological conditions are a result of an anticyclone located north of the Azores archipelago and a depression trough extending from North Africa to the Iberian Peninsula. The hot and dry air mass transported by these systems originates from North Africa.

The repeated heat alerts stem from the persistent and intense heat conditions that have previously led to increased mortality in vulnerable populations, emphasizing the importance of heatwave precautions. As the situation evolves, continuous monitoring of IPMA updates and adhering to local authorities’ recommendations remain crucial.

Despite the high temperatures, nights will be hot throughout the country starting from Sunday, with temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. High temperatures are predicted to continue until at least August 6.

Citizens are advised to limit their exposure to heat and use protective measures such as wearing light clothing and sunscreen. The IPMA's general guidance for such events typically stresses these practical actions to mitigate heat-related risks.

While no new distinct precaution measures were listed explicitly for the weekend, the recurrent IPMA guidance for such events typically stresses these practical actions to mitigate heat-related risks. Continuous monitoring of IPMA updates and adhering to local authorities’ recommendations remain crucial as the situation evolves.

  • In the current heatwave affecting Portugal, it's crucial to prioritize environmental-science regulations and precautions to keep up with the scientific data about the weather conditions, which are predicted to remain intense until at least August 6.
  • To ensure safety during the next few days, especially during the peak heat hours, individuals should follow guidelines from the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which include staying hydrated, seeking shade, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities.
