Southwestern Germany Bakes in Unusual Heatwave

Southwestern Germany is currently experiencing an unusual heatwave, with temperatures soaring to record-breaking levels. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the highest temperature recorded on Wednesday was in Kaiserslautern, where the mercury climbed up to 36.5°C.

This temperature is the third highest recorded on Wednesday, with Rheinfelden reporting a high of 37.0°C, and Müllheim near Freiburg reaching 35.4°C on Tuesday. Provisional measurements on Tuesday evening showed up to 34.8°C in Rheinfelden, and In Trier-Zewen, temperatures reached 34.3°C on Tuesday.

However, it's important to note that these temperature records were not from the states previously mentioned, Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. The new temperature expectations for Thursday are lower than the current annual record of 39.3°C, which was measured on July 2, 2025, in Andernach (Rhineland-Palatinate). The all-time temperature record for Germany is 41.2°C, measured on July 25, 2019, at the DWD weather stations in Tönisvorst and Duisburg-Baerl (both in North Rhine-Westphalia).

The current weather forecast for southwestern Germany, including Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, for the upcoming days indicates continued warm and relatively dry conditions with some risk of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Some scattered episodes of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast, especially in areas of south Germany where level 1 warnings have been issued for heavy rainfall, along with risks of severe wind gusts.

This warmer and drier pattern fits with a widespread heatwave across Europe affecting Central and Southern Europe. Southwestern Germany may experience warm air masses under the influence of large-scale ridges, but some frontal systems and troughs will bring intermittent cooler air and storm chances.

In summary, expect warm and mostly dry conditions with daytime highs near 30°C, but brief thunderstorms and heavy showers are possible in the coming days in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, especially associated with fronts passing through Central Europe. Stay tuned for further updates from the German Weather Service (DWD).
