Intense Fear in Gaza City: Israel's Approach Towards City Center, Surrounding Residents
In the heart of the Middle East, the ongoing conflict in Gaza continues to unfold, causing widespread devastation and human suffering. The Israeli army, in its advance, is utilising a combination of infantry, tanks, artillery, and air force, as well as unmanned vehicles packed with explosives to blow up neighbourhoods.
The Israeli military's advance towards the center of Gaza City from two directions - northwest and southeast - is putting pressure on the armed group Hamas, with the stated goal of applying such pressure. However, this advance has resulted in a significant loss of life, with at least 10 Palestinians reportedly killed by Israeli fire in various parts of the enclave.
The situation is particularly dire in Gaza City, where fleeing families face the heartbreaking prospect of renewed displacement in a territory devoid of safe zones. Approximately 740,000 people, which is about 35% of Gaza's 2.1 million population, are still in the north of the enclave as of Tuesday.
The closure of the Zikim crossing to Gaza's famine-stricken north and bans on certain food items have been cited as contributing factors to the worsening humanitarian crisis. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Palestine has denounced Israel's "blatant disregard" for international legal requirements to distinguish between combatants and civilians in its air attacks on Gaza.
The United Nations humanitarian office (OCHA) has warned that Gaza City's last lifelines are collapsing. On Thursday, at least 40 people were killed in Gaza City, according to medical sources. The UK's permanent representative to the UN, Barbara Woodward, stated that Israel's reckless expansion of its military operation takes us further away from a deal which could bring the hostages home and end the suffering in Gaza.
In a move that has sparked international condemnation, the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, the lifting of restrictions on aid into Gaza, and the return of hostages held by Hamas. The US attempted to pass a humanitarian resolution for the Gaza Strip in the UN Security Council, but the initiative was blocked by a US veto on Thursday, September 18, 2025. The resolution, supported by the ten non-permanent members, called for the unconditional lifting of all restrictions on humanitarian aid into Gaza, but the US opposed it, citing concerns it would support Hamas.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OCHR) has accused Israel of "systematically blocking" aid efforts to people in Gaza. The Israeli military reported that four of its soldiers were killed in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
As the conflict continues to escalate, the international community must urgently address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and work towards a peaceful resolution that prioritises the protection of civilians and the restoration of basic services.
