Shaking Rydułtowy: Ongoing Mining Rescue Operation
A massive earthquake-like shock rippled through the Rydułtowy mine in Rybnik at 8:16 AM local time on Thursday, sending 68 miners scrambling for safety. The tremor, pumping out 3.1 on the seismograph, reaped havoc among the underground workers.
The Polish Mining Group (PGG) announced that 15 miners were swiftly evacuated post-shock, with 10 of them hospitalized due to unspecified injuries. The remaining miners are still being assessed. The Air Ambulance Service dispatched their helicopters, and 10 rescue teams were summoned to the chaotic scene.
"The quake was powerful and pulsating, originating from seam 713 at a depth of 1,200 meters," reported PGG spokesperson, Aleksandra Wysocka-Siembiga, adding they are in the process of evacuating the crew and conducting the rescue operation, hoping for the best.
Sustained Rescue Operation
As the rescue teams dig in, they are laser-focused on evaluating the risks of additional cave-ins and fires, prioritizing both trapped miners and rescue personnel safety. Zbigniew Rawicki, Director of the Department of Underground and Open-Pit Mining at the Higher Mining Office, denoted that the quake's energy was akin to a medium-sized earthquake, causing severe injury to the mine's underground infrastructure.
"We're consistently checking conditions to make sure rescue teams are working as securely as possible," Rawicki asserted on Polsat News.
By noon, PGG verified that contact with two miners has been lost. Preliminary reports from the RMF24 portal indicated that communications with 12 miners were initially severed. The localized area where the quake struck has been sealed off for safety reasons.

The police have been present onsite, managing crowds of anxious family members, while ensuring emergency service access isn't obstructed. "We received a report of the accident from the Rydułtowy mine, and a substantial number of individuals have amassed since learning about the shock," said Małgorzata Koniarska, a senior officer from the Wodzisław Śląski police department.
Despite the extensive damage and relentless rescue efforts, there have been no fatalities reported thus far. The community remains edgy as unfolding developments from the mine continue to drip in.
