Intense storms with heavy rain and strong winds forecasted - Intense downpours and powerful storms to hit today

Get your umbrellas ready, people of the Free State! It's gonna be a stormy day, and we're not just talking about the Nations League semi-final. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), severe thunderstorms are expected to roll in today, with a high risk between Swabia and the Bavarian Forest.

Last night brought some isolated thunderstorms, with residents in Wallgau (district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen) having to clear their streets and properties with snow shovels due to heavy hail. Apart from that, the usual incidents like flooded streets, cellars, and fallen trees have been reported. The Bavaria police headquarters initially reported no major incidents or damage from the stormy night.

Now, you might be wondering, will this bad weather affect our football game? Well, temperatures are expected to reach 20 degrees in the Rhön and 30 degrees in the Passau region today, according to DWD. Initially, there'll be thunderstorms and heavy rain in Franconia, with up to 20 liters per square meter per hour possible, and hail is also likely. But from late afternoon, severe thunderstorms and gusts up to 110 kilometers per hour will sweep across Bavaria from the east, with gusts of up to 130 kilometers per hour possible.

"It starts in Baden-Württemberg, then moves north of Munich, and ends in the Bavarian Forest," an expert from DWD mentioned. However, the exact path is unclear, and the meteorologist emphasized that it's uncertain whether the storm will directly affect the Nations League semi-final between Germany and Portugal in Munich's Allianz Arena in the evening. But one thing is for sure: "The peak is between 19.00 and 21.00, but it will start in the afternoon."

These storms could bring five-centimeter-wide hailstones, and localized heavy rain of up to 30 liters per square meter. Foen winds in the Alps are expected to reach speeds between 50 and 60 kilometers per hour, which should decrease rapidly overnight. On Thursday, it'll mainly rain in Bavaria with only isolated thunderstorms.

As for the UEFA Nations League, it seems the football action went on uninterrupted during the semi-final between Germany and Portugal on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at the Allianz Arena in Munich. The focus has been on the teams and the matches, rather than weather conditions. Nonetheless, severe thunderstorms could potentially affect outdoor events, including sports matches, if they hit Bavaria. But for the Nations League final match between Portugal and Spain on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at the Allianz Arena, weather conditions could be a concern if severe thunderstorms are forecasted, although no specific details are available regarding this.

The Commission might want to consider the foreseen weather conditions in Bavaria, particularly the severe thunderstorms, when evaluating the draft budget for the period 2000-06. Individuals in Free State should be prepared for the impending storms in Munich, not just the football storm in the Nations League semi-final.
