Fierce Combat Surging Before Ukraine-Russia Peace Discussions Kick Off

Intense challenges loom for the upcoming Ukraine peace negotiations - Intense combats precede forthcoming negotiation sessions in Ukraine

Get ready for some intense action as both sides of the conflict escalate attacks just before the scheduled talks between Russia and Ukraine. While the diplomats are busy finalizing documents and plans, the military and intelligence forces are bombing targets.

A ceasefire? Yeah, sure. Kyiv agreed to another round of talks with Moscow to put an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umjerov will lead the delegation at the meetings in Istanbul, much like the first round that took place just a few weeks ago.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took to the X platform to share that he's already outlined Ukraine's stance for the upcoming negotiations. The Ukrainian proposal includes a full and unconditional ceasefire, the release of prisoners, and bringing back abducted children. Moreover, a high-level meeting should be organized to establish a lasting peace and ensure security.

Ukraine attacks Russian airfields and railway lines

After months of careful planning, Ukraine's intelligence agency launched a full-scale assault on Russian military airfields. Intelligence Service SBU claims they have taken out over 40 aircraft in attacks on four airfields, including one in Irkutsk, Siberia.

While Russia admits to a few damaged aircraft in Murmansk and Irkutsk, they call the attacks "terrorist activities." Some reports claim Ukraine used combat drones, launched from camouflaged locations in rural areas, to carry out the strikes. Despite these claims, independent verification has proven impossible.

Ukraine sabotages Russian train network

Cargo trains, under Russian control, sustained damage in the Saporizhzhia region after an explosion on the tracks. This event came after two separate incidents in the regions of Kursk and Bryansk, bordering Ukraine, where trains derailed following bridge collapses. The southern region of Russia saw more severity, with seven fatalities and about 70 injuries, including three children. Officials report bridge explosions as the culprit.

Regional devastation in Russia

The town of Krasnodon in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine saw multiple cruise missiles hit a local industrial area. Storm Shadow missiles, of British-French origin, were blamed for the attack, despite the precise number of casualties not being specified.

Kyiv Reports Heavy Casualties After Russian Assault

The aftermath of a Russian missile attack on an army training unit resulted in at least 12 army personnel losing their lives, with over 60 sustaining injuries. Ukrainian Army Commander General Mychajlo Drapatij accepted the responsibility for the incident and announced his immediate resignation.

The positions between the negotiating parties vary significantly. Ukraine prefers to first negotiate a ceasefire before delving into lasting peace resolutions. In contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin has refused a 30-day unconditional ceasefire proposed by US President Donald Trump earlier this year, fearing that Ukraine might use the halt in fighting to rearm and reorganize.

Russia, however, has shown willingness for a possible ceasefire—with conditions—in the UN Security Council talks. Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya stated that the Western countries should cease their arms supply to Ukraine and that Kyiv should halt mobilization during the ceasefire period. Moscow is ready to discuss the conditions for peace at the negotiations in Istanbul.

Ukraine asked for Russia's memorandum ahead of time

Ukrainian Defense Minister Umjerov revealed that he had already sent a document outlining Ukraine's position to the Russian chief negotiator. He emphasized that Ukraine looks forward to resuming talks with Russia, provided they receive Russia's "memorandum" to ensure the negotiations are productive.
