Fiery Conflict Looms Before Ukraine Peace Discussions: Russian and Ukrainian Forces Clash Just Days Before Talks
Escalating conflicts preceding the forthcoming Ukraine peace negotiations - Intense combat precedes planned negotiations in Ukraine
War drums are rumbling as Russian and Ukrainian forces engage in heated battles mere days before the planned peace talks between the two nations. While envoys are busy finalizing papers, the military continues to wage spectacular attacks with drones and explosives.
The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has agreed to Russia's proposal for a fresh round of direct discussions to end the Ukraine war. He announced via the X platform that his delegation, led by Defense Minister Rustem Umjerov, will participate in the talks in Istanbul, Turkey—the same location as the first round two weeks prior.
Zelenskyy made it clear that his country's position for the Istanbul negotiations is firm: a complete ceasefire, the release of prisoners, the return of kidnapped children, and preparations for a high-level meeting to establish a solid and long-lasting peace, ensuring security for all.
Ukraine strikes deep within Russian soil
Following months of preparation, Ukraine's intelligence service launched a massive assault against Russian military airbases. According to the Ukrainian intelligence service SBU, over 40 aircraft, including Tupolev Tu-95 and Tu-22 bombers, as well as special early warning aircraft Beriev A-50, were destroyed at four airfields, including one in Irkutsk, Siberia.
Although the Russian military confirmed "terrorist attacks," it reported only a handful of planes sustained damage at Murmansk and Irkutsk. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the Ukrainian intelligence service used combat drones launched from small wooden houses hidden in trucks. The precise details of the attack remain unverified.
Early on Saturday, an explosion on railroad tracks reportedly caused a freight train carrying fuel tanks and wagons to derail in a Russian-controlled part of the Saporizhzhia region.
This incident followed two incidents in Russia on Sunday night: bridge collapses in the border regions of Kursk and Bryansk. Although initial reports indicated a single injury in Kursk, the situation in Bryansk was more dire, with seven fatalities and approximately 70 injuries, including three children. Governor Alexander Bogomaz confirmed explosions on the bridges. The Russian Investigative Committee classified the bridge collapses as acts of terrorism.
In the town of Krasnodon in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine, numerous cruise missiles struck an industrial zone, according to Russian reports. The Moscow-appointed governor Leonid Pasentchuk reported that Storm Shadow missiles, a British-French type, had hit the industrial zone. The attack resulted in unspecified injuries.
Casualties Reported After Russian Attack on Ukrainian Troops
Following a Russian missile strike on an army training unit, at least twelve soldiers were killed, and over sixty were injured, according to statements from ground troops. During the air alert, there was no roll call or mass gathering, the military reported.
Ukrainian army commander General Mychajlo Drapatij accepted responsibility for the incident and announced his immediate resignation. "As commander, I failed to ensure the full implementation of my orders," he wrote on Facebook. "I did not exert pressure, convince, or change the attitude towards the men in the ranks. I bear this responsibility."
Diverging Approaches in Negotiations
Moscow and Kyiv differ in their negotiation strategies. Ukraine insists on negotiating a ceasefire first, which would allow for discussions on the final peace, while
Russia, in March, rejected a proposed unconditional 30-day ceasefire proposed by US President Donald Trump, stating that Ukraine could rearm and reorganize during that time. Russia continues to fight until Ukraine agrees to its conditions for a final peace.
However, on Friday, Russia hinted at a possible ceasefire—with conditions. "At least, it is required that Western countries stop supplying weapons to the Kyiv regime and Ukraine ends its mobilization during the ceasefire," said Russian UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya. His country is ready to discuss the conditions for peace during Monday's negotiations in Istanbul.
Russia's peace conditions mirror Ukraine's surrender. Moscow claims large portions of Ukraine, areas it has not yet conquered. Furthermore, the Kremlin aims to maintain influence over the Russian-speaking minority in Ukraine, preventing it from joining NATO and maintaining a robust military.
Ukraine Seeks Russian Memorandum Before Talks
Ukrainian Defense Minister Ummerov revealed that Ukraine had already sent a written proposal outlining its position to the Russian chief negotiator. "We are not against further meetings with the Russians and await their 'memorandum' so that the meeting is not in vain and brings us closer to ending the war," he wrote on X. Ummerov accused Moscow of continued delays and reiterated Ukraine's willingness for a full and unconditional ceasefire.
