Intense brawl amongst soccer enthusiasts leaves Netherlands stunned
Mass Brawl Marred Dutch Promotion Game
Shocking scenes unfolded in the Netherlands after a promotion-round match between Telstar 1963 and FC Den Bosch. Fan groups from both teams stormed the pitch following Telstar's 2-1 extra-time victory, leading to a violent mass brawl.
The Netherlands was left stunned, with "De Telegraaf" newspaper describing the incident as "reminding us of the darker days of hooliganism and fan riots in Dutch football." For several minutes, the troublemakers wreaked havoc on the pitch and in the stands, with players from both teams fleeing as chaos erupted.
The violent clashes involved heavy kicks and punches between the fan groups. Police were forced to intervene, using cudgels and dogs to restore order in the stadium. One individual sustained severe injuries that required on-pitch medical attention. The authorities did not immediately confirm any arrests. The injured fan was eventually escorted off the pitch.
Telstar goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr., speaking to TV station NH, expressed his disappointment. "It's very sad that our celebration was ruined. I immediately went to the dressing room after seeing some fans run onto the pitch," he said, adding that the focus should have been on the team's performance rather than the behavior of the spectators.
The first leg of the series in Den Bosch ended goalless. Telstar turned the game around after going a goal down early in the first half, with Youssef El Kachati converting a penalty to equalize, followed by Danny Bakker's extra-time winner securing Telstar's place in the promotion final.
While a high-profile incident involving Ajax and another mass brawl in Dutch football was reported recently, there is no evidence of such violent incidents specifically in promotion games. Other promotion-worthy matches, such as Groningen vs. Helmond Sport, have not been associated with such incidents in recent reports.
