Heavy Russian Air Strike on Kyiv Causes Casualties and Damage
Kyiv, Ukraine, 31st July 2025 - A heavy Russian missile and drone air strike on Kyiv on July 31, 2025, resulted in at least 16 deaths, including two children, and approximately 145 to 159 injuries. The attack caused significant damage, collapsing a large portion of a nine-story residential building and damaging over 100 buildings, including homes, schools, kindergartens, medical facilities, and universities across at least 27 locations in Kyiv[1][2][3][4].
The casualties included a record number of children, with the youngest being 5 months old[1][2][3]. Ukraine's response included ongoing rescue operations to find people trapped under rubble, condemnation of the attack by President Volodymyr Zelensky, and emphasis on the need for international support to force Russia to negotiate peace. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted and jammed the majority of the 309 Shahed and decoy drones and eight Iskander-K cruise missiles launched by Russia, although some got through and struck their targets[3].
Russia claimed success in the attack amid ongoing conflict, but Ukraine disputed Russian claims of advancing on other fronts. The attack occurred while diplomatic talks between the US, Russia, and Ukraine showed no progress, with Western leaders accusing Russia of delaying peace efforts[1][2]. President Zelensky reaffirmed reliance on international partners to compel Moscow to negotiate seriously[2].
In a statement, Zelenskyy wrote that the world has once again seen Russia's response to their shared wish for peace with America and Europe. He further stated that Kyiv was the main target of the Russian attacks[1]. The city head of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, did not provide specific details about casualties or the nature of the attack, but he urged residents to flee to safer parts of the country due to the approaching frontline[1].
An attack also occurred on the frontline city of Kramatorsk, resulting in at least one death and 11 injuries. The Russian-Ukrainian frontline is approximately 15 kilometers south of Kramatorsk[1]. If confirmed, Russian troops raising Russian flags in the western part of Chasiv Yar could open the way for them towards the important industrial city of Kostiantynivka[1].
In a separate incident, Ukraine attacked Russian territory with drones, causing a fire on the grounds of an industrial enterprise in the Penza region. No casualties or damage were reported in the Penza region drone attack, but there is an electronics company in Penza that produces computer equipment for the Russian Defense Ministry, as well as an arms factory[1].
This was one of the heaviest attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks, highlighting the ongoing severity of the conflict as of late July 2025.
