Spain Faces Worst Wildfire Season in Over 30 Years

Spain is currently grappling with its most severe wildfire season in over three decades, with an estimated 382,000 to nearly 400,000 hectares of land burned so far in 2025 [1][3][4][5]. This devastating season has seen nearly as much land burned in just 13 days as the entire year of 2022, previously the worst in recent years [1].

The ongoing drought, strong winds, difficult-to-reach areas, and a prolonged heatwave with temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius are hindering the work of the firefighting forces [4]. These challenging conditions have led to the ignition and rapid spread of over 220 larger fires across Spain, with 23 fires currently active in the Autonomous Communities of Castile and León, Galicia, Asturias, and Extremadura [1][3][4].

The main causes of these wildfires include a particularly dry spring followed by extreme heatwaves that dried out vegetation, combined with poor forest management and depopulation in rural areas [3][4]. Climate factors such as drought and heatwaves also contributed to the severity and rapid spread of the fires [4].

The regions most affected by these wildfires are Galicia, Asturias, Castilla y León, and Extremadura — areas that are among the country's oldest and most sparsely populated [1][3]. Thousands of firefighters have been deployed to contain the blazes, with a relief convoy from Bonn, consisting of 67 firefighters and over 20 vehicles, expected to support Spanish forces this week [1].

The current situation involves numerous active wildfires, with authorities reporting that Spain had nearly contained the most deadly wildfires of the season by August 23 but continued monitoring ongoing risks [5]. However, on Monday, 16 mainly smaller roads were closed due to the fires, and high-speed train traffic between Madrid and Galicia has been suspended for the fifth day in a row [1].

Additionally, the wildfire season in Spain has contributed to a sharp rise in emissions, with the highest wildfire emissions recorded since 2003, significantly impacting air quality with dangerous particulate matter levels above WHO safety guidelines [2]. Tragically, four lives have been claimed by the forest fires this year, and on Sunday, a firefighter died in an accident during operations in Portugal [1].

As the firefighting efforts continue, the impact of these wildfires on Spain's natural landscapes and communities remains significant. Over 3,440 square kilometers of nature have been destroyed, an area roughly the size of the Saarland, with parts of nature reserves also being affected [1].
