Intense artillery duels exchange hands between Indian and Pakistani military forces.
In the heart of Kashmir, the frontier between India and Pakistan ignited once more in a whirlwind of gunfire and shelling. This heated exchange, happening around the end of May 2025, was a grim follow-up to an attack earlier in the month that left 28 innocent bystanders dead in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
In the nearby Pakistani regions, the sound of artillery rang out, claiming at least four lives and wounding 12 others. Local authorities confirmed that the firing lasted well into the early hours of the next day.
Residents of border towns shared tales of the prolonged conflict, describing it as a grim scene that persisted through the night.
A total of six civilians lost their lives, and four others were injured in the Indian sectors of Uri and Poonch. These tragic deaths raised the death toll in Indian-controlled Kashmir to a heart-wrenching 18 since the initial attack.
On the other side of the Line of Control, Pakistan reported 17 civilian casualties in the same timeframe.
In an effort to protect their citizens, Indian authorities evacuated tens of thousands from villages near the border. For the second consecutive night, thousands sought refuge in shelters.
Tensions between these nuclear-armed nations had been steadily mounting since the attack on civilians in Indian-controlled Kashmir. New Delhi firmly believed that Pakistan was responsible for providing support to these attacks, a claim Islamabad vehemently denied.
On the 7th of May, India asserted that they thwarted numerous drone attacks on military targets, including in Jammu city, using more than a dozen cities and towns as launch pads. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Furthermore, on May 9, India launched a series of airstrikes onto sites in Pakistani territory that it deemed to be linked to militants, resulting in an estimated 31 civilian casualties, according to Pakistani officials.
Pakistan, however, denied carrying out drone attacks in Indian-controlled Kashmir and claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets.
The events of May 2025 seemed to serve as a stark reminder of the delicate balance of power in the region. As fears of military conflict escalated, the US Vice President, JD Vance, expressed that any potential war between India and Pakistan would be "none of our business."
