Russian Forces Intensify Efforts to Capture Key Ukrainian Logistics Hub
Russian forces are intensifying their efforts to surround and capture Pokrovsk, a crucial Ukrainian logistics hub in Donetsk Oblast. Despite steady advances from multiple directions—north, east, and south—Russian troops have not yet succeeded in fully encircling or capturing the city.
The offensive operations near Pokrovsk continue, with Russian troops employing infiltration tactics such as dressing in civilian clothes and planting mines and drones on Ukrainian supply lines. However, Ukrainian forces remain resilient, mounting counterattacks and forming specialized counter-sabotage reserves to neutralize these threats.
According to Ukrainian commanders, the defense situation is critical but not yet lost, and ongoing fortification and defensive efforts are being made to hold the city. Analyses from late July and early August confirm Russian advances just north of Rodynske (north of Pokrovsk) and attempts to seize surrounding key areas, but a full encirclement or capture of Pokrovsk has not been confirmed as of August 2, 2025.
The fighting around Pokrovsk is among the most intense in the summer campaign, reflecting Moscow’s strategic priority to consolidate control over the Donetsk region. The advancements of Russian forces could potentially cut off Pokrovsk's logistics routes and ground lines of communication, making the city's defense crucial for Ukrainian operations in Donbas.
Russian forces have been attempting to capture Pokrovsk since February 2024, following their capture of Avdiivka. The tactics used by Russian forces in their attempts to capture Pokrovsk are similar to those used in Vuhledar and Avdiivka.
