Intelligence assessments by the UK's Defence on the circumstances surrounding Pokrovsk, Donetsk Region
In Eastern Ukraine, the key logistics hub of Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast has been a focal point of ongoing conflict, with Russian forces making incremental advances over the past month, according to reports from UK Defence Intelligence and European Pravda.
As of early August 2025, Russian forces have made gains of approximately 8 to 10 kilometers around Pokrovsk, seizing nearby settlements such as Novoukrainka to the south. They are pushing from multiple directions, including northeast, east, southeast, south, and southwest of the city.
On 22 July 2025, Ukrainian forces conducted clearing operations in response to the attempted infiltration by Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups in the southern part of Pokrovsk, as reported by open sources. Despite these efforts, fighting remains intense with frequent counterattacks, as Russian troops employ tactics such as infiltration in civilian clothing and drone-based mining to disrupt Ukrainian lines of communication.
However, Ukrainian defenders have resisted effectively, with President Zelenskyy recently visiting the frontline near Pokrovsk. The strategic importance of the area is underscored by the reported amassing of around 110,000 Russian troops in the sector, indicating the scale of hostilities there.
Notably, the main northern supply route to Pokrovsk runs through the town of Rodynske. The frontline remains contested, with Ukrainian forces mounting counterattacks in several areas, including Volodymyrivka northeast of Pokrovsk.
In a significant development, Russian troops have captured territory south of the H-32 road, advancing in the area of Myroliubivka. As the battle for control of Pokrovsk continues, both sides show no signs of backing down, with the fate of this critical logistics hub hanging in the balance.
