Insights into the British National Road Cycling Competition

Get psyched, cycling fans! The 2025 British National Road Championships are set to rock west Wales for four action-packed days, starting June 26. Here's the lowdown on what to expect.

This year's event has moved from Saltburn-by-the-Sea to the picturesque Ceredigion countryside in mid-Wales, where the Welsh language thrives. The circuit races and road races will unfold in Aberwystwyth, while the time trials will take place in Aberaeron.

Defending champion Pfeiffer Georgi has a golden opportunity to make history, aiming to win the national title an unprecedented three times in a row. Georgi, riding for Team Picnic PostNL, has already elevated herself to second place in the all-time wins list for women, and a fourth title would cement her place.

The men's peloton might see some surprising absences. Ethan Hayter is expected to compete, but familiar faces like two-time road race winner Fred Wright, TT champion Josh Tarling (post-Giro d´Italia crash worries), and Geraint Thomas (post-Tour de Suisse crash) could miss out.

The time trials are not for the faint-hearted, with elevations of 418 meters for women and 677 meters for men over 27 and 41 kilometers respectively, making this anything but a route for pure endurance athletes.

Looking at the Welsh representation, Owain Doull (EF Education-EasyPost), Zoe Bäckstedt (Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto) and her sister Elynor (UAE Team ADQ), Elinor Barker (Uno-X Mobility) and her sister Megan Barker (Tekkerz CC), and Tomos Pattinson (Visma-Lease a Bike Development) aiming to fly the flag.

Trefechan Hill's 700-meter, 7% gradient climb in Aberystwyth will be a selective test in the road races. With four ascents for women and five for men, this could be a deciding factor in races where sprint finishes might not materialize. The elite women's race spans 128 kilometers with 1,839 meters of elevation, while the elite men's race covers 187 kilometers with a grueling 2,674 meters of climbing.

To catch all the action, tune into the British Cycling YouTube channel, Discovery+ online, or TNT Sports, with a highlights package airing on Discovery+ and TNT Sports 2 at 7pm on July 1.

Back to the racers to watch: Ethan Hayter, Lewis Askey, Cat Ferguson, and the unstoppable Pfeiffer Georgi. Be prepared for an exhilarating event as these top-tier athletes battle for the coveted national titles and the honor of representing Britain in their patriotic red, white, and blue jerseys for the rest of 2025 and into 2026.

In closing, keep a close eye on rising stars like Seb Grindley, Tomos Pattinson, Matt Bostock, Ollie Wood, Adam Howell, and Noémie Thomson, who bring fresh energy and fire to the race scene, ensuring this year's championships will be nothing short of spectacular.
