Inquiry Regarding Tax Demand: Peller Questions Lagos Government about ₦36 Million Tax Claim
TikTok Star Peller Expresses Concern Over ₦36 Million Tax Bill
TikTok influencer Habeeb Hamzat, better known as Peller, has found himself in a tax controversy with the Lagos State Government. The influencer, who rose to fame last year, has been asked to pay ₦36 million in income tax, a demand he finds unreasonable given his recent rise and current earnings.
In a viral video, Peller voiced his frustration over the tax bill, questioning the rationale behind such a high amount. He emphasized that he does not have sufficient income to pay such an amount.
The Lagos State Government has responded to Peller's claims through the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tax and Revenue, Abdulkabir Ogungbo. Ogungbo stated that the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) is empowered by law to assess and make judgments on tax issues. He also noted that anyone earning income within the state must pay their due taxes, while indicating that he would review Peller's specific case further.
Singer Peruzzi joined the discussion, reminding Peller that paying taxes is a legal obligation for Nigerians. Peruzzi suggested that Peller should request more time to arrange payment, but Peller maintains that his income comes mainly from social media, not local Nigerian sources.
Peller believes he was targeted because he openly shows off his wealth and discloses his earnings from TikTok. He claims that he does not have ₦36 million and has only recently come into the limelight. Peruzzi, on the other hand, mentioned that his own tax payments exceed what Peller was asked to pay.
Peruzzi advised Peller to clear the tax bill promptly to avoid legal trouble, including possible imprisonment. However, Peller insists that the tax demand is too high and claims the government has never supported him in his TikTok activities.
As of now, it is unclear how Peller plans to proceed officially with the tax demand. The LIRS has not issued a statement regarding Peller's specific case beyond Ogungbo's initial response.
