Inquiry into Identity of Liverpool Crash Suspect: Paul Doyle

Ex-Royal Marine Commando Charged in Liverpool Parade Crash

A former Royal Marine commando, Paul Doyle, has been charged following a car incident during the Liverpool parade on Monday that left 79 people injured. The accident occurred while football fans were celebrating Liverpool Football Club's Premier League win.

Doyle, aged 53 and a resident of the West Derby area of Liverpool, was detained after some courageous supporters attempted to shatter the car windows when he seemed to lose control of the vehicle. Neighbors claim Doyle's wife only found out about the crash when she saw the car on the news.

Doyle, a father of three, is allegedly a businessman who led a now-defunct firm. Police have maintained a presence outside his family home, a four-bedroom house shared with his teacher wife and three children, since Monday.

Doyle is accused of multiple offenses, including dangerous driving, causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, wounding with intent to cause GBH, and attempting GBH. He is expected to stand trial for these allegations.

The crash occurred in Water Street, as thousands of Liverpool fans gathered to watch the title winners parade the Premier League trophy on an open-top bus. The event took place for the first time since 1990, allowing fans to celebrate the victory parade after their 2020 success during the pandemic.

The crowds were suddenly overwhelmed when a dark grey Ford Galaxy veered into them. Merseyside Police has revealed that the car followed an ambulance past the cordon as medical support was called for a person experiencing a suspected heart attack.

Mobile phone footage captured the car plowing into the crowd as screams echoed through the area. The impact sent pedestrians fleeing, but the vehicle regained momentum, only to be stopped by heroic fans attempting to pull the driver away. After a short struggle, the vehicle lurched forward again, causing more chaos before finally coming to a halt.

Fire crews arrived at the scene to discover four individuals trapped under the vehicle, including a child, who were promptly freed. Seventy-nine people were rushed to the hospital, with two individuals—one of them a child—suffering serious injuries. As of Wednesday, seven of the victims remain in a stable condition in the hospital.

A witness, Harry Rashid, stated, "It happened about ten feet from us. The vehicle came to our right. It emerged from just right next to a parked ambulance. It pulled up from the right and rammed into all the people at the side of us. It was fast. The noise was terrifying."

Merseyside Police has confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related and that the driver is a white British man. Further investigation is ongoing.
