Inquiry from Aiwanger: Is there a plan to expand the count of county councils?
In a recent statement made on the sidelines of a faction meeting in Bamberg, Hubert Aiwanger, leader of the Free Voters, expressed his expectations for the upcoming municipal election in Bavaria. Scheduled for approximately six months from the time of his statement, Aiwanger highlighted the party's ambitions in the local elections and criticised the federal government's cuts in the infrastructure sector.
Aiwanger voiced his concerns over infrastructure projects in Bavaria being pushed back and criticised the current budget debate for showing cuts rather than expansions in the infrastructure sector. He directed clear demands at the CSU coalition partner, urging them to bring up the issue of infrastructure funds sharply in Berlin.
In terms of the Free Voters' prospects in the upcoming elections, Aiwanger believes the party may expand its mayoral seats, although he did not mention any specific regions where the party might expand. He anticipates an increase in the number of county councilors for the Free Voters, but did not specify the exact number.
Currently, the Free Voters hold 14 out of 71 county council seats in Bavaria. Aiwanger did not disclose the number of mayoral seats currently held by the party, but he expects the party to maintain its mayoral seats on average.
Apart from the elections, Aiwanger also discussed potential candidates for district administrator posts in the 2026 Bavarian local elections. Michael Dinkelmeier in Donau-Ries, Anton Speer who seeks re-election in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Tamara Bischof in Dettelbach are among the potential Freie Wähler candidates, each with the backing of their party and other officials.
Aiwanger also highlighted the presence of 'very promising' county council candidates in the region. However, he did not specify the exact number he expects the party to gain in the county council.
With the municipal election fast approaching, Aiwanger's statements underscore the Free Voters' ambitions and their focus on infrastructure development in Bavaria.
