Chair of Constitution Protection Committee: Probe Will Last for Years

Committee to Conduct Long-Term Investigation Led by Chairman - Inquiry Committee will operate for extended periods, as per announcement by the Chairman.

In a chat with the German Press Agency, Martin Henkel, the head of the Constitution Protection inquiry committee in Erfurt, revealed the panel's initial focus on political influence within the state over the past few years. The CDU chairman underscored the committee's first mission will be to probe whether Thuringia's Constitution Protection has manipulated the political landscape.

Complex G, mentioned in the committee's establishment resolution, outlines this primary goal. The other complexes, particularly those connecting to the Constitution Protection President, Stephan Kramer, will be tackled at a later stage, according to Henkel. He predicts a multi-year duration for the investigation, as concerns pertaining to Kramer's leadership team take a backseat to questions about political machinations.

The upcoming inquiry committee meeting is this Friday, and Henkel aims to set the ball rolling on examining the AfD's classifications by the state constitution protection. To progress with this agenda, Henkel requires approval from the majority of the committee members. He expresses confidence that this majority will be present.

Born out of the AfD's parliamentary group in March, the Constitution Protection inquiry committee was established to scrutinize issues such as adherence to law and justice within Kramer's office, the possible political influence of the interior ministry, and more. The Thuringian state association of the AfD was labeled a "proven right-wing extremist observation object" by the state constitution protection in 2021.

As for the list of witnesses set to testify before the committee, it's yet to be finalized. The details of the requests for evidence from individual factions are still being discussed. Henkel anticipates the first hearings to take place following the summer break.
