Inquire Travellers: What is the purpose of 'Bridge' in the Travel Rule Regulation?

In the ever-evolving world of cryptocurrency, ensuring the security and compliance of transactions is paramount. One crucial solution to this challenge is the Travel Rule Bridge. Emeka Mgbenu, Senior Product Manager, will delve into this topic in a bi-weekly Q&A series by Sumsub.

The Travel Rule Bridge, a secure, encrypted, and reliable method for exchanging personally identifiable information, plays a pivotal role in maintaining privacy and adhering to data protection regulations worldwide. It is designed to facilitate the secure, accurate, and privacy-conscious exchange of required originator and beneficiary information associated with transactions exceeding a legal threshold, typically $1,000 or €1,000.

Key components of a compliant Travel Rule Bridge include data collection and transmission, identity verification and KYC/AML integration, compliance with regulatory registrations and licensing, secure infrastructure and data protection, interoperability and API integration, transaction monitoring and controls, and support for global compliance standards.

Data Collection and Transmission involves gathering and securely transmitting the sender’s and recipient’s full name, wallet address or account number, plus an additional identifier such as a national ID or date of birth, as mandated by the FATF Travel Rule. Identity Verification and KYC/AML Integration ensures robust verification of identities and compliance with regulatory standards.

Compliance with Regulatory Registrations and Licensing requires operating under appropriate regulatory frameworks, such as Money Services Business (MSB) registrations, Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) registrations, and, where applicable, specific licenses like U.S. state MTLs or BitLicenses. Secure Infrastructure and Data Protection employs strong security measures to protect sensitive personal information and maintain system integrity.

Interoperability and API Integration provides APIs for seamless connection with exchanges, wallets, and other service providers to facilitate automatic and timely data sharing compliant with the Travel Rule. Transaction Monitoring and Controls implement configurable client policies to monitor and control transactions in line with compliance requirements.

Support for Global Compliance Standards ensures adaptation to and support of international Travel Rule requirements mandated by regulatory bodies like FATF, ensuring both originator and beneficiary institutions obtain and hold required information accurately for cross-border crypto transfers.

The bridge can exist as a software solution within a closed Travel Rule ecosystem, an open-source Travel Rule ecosystem, or between several travel rule protocols. Using a Travel Rule provider that can communicate across multiple protocols is advantageous for being fully compliant. A proper Travel Rule Bridge should ensure that the required data inputs are received in the correct format and transferred appropriately, regardless of the end protocol.

Responses, logs, and data exchanged through the bridge should be stored effectively for both parties. The bridge is an essential component of any Travel Rule solution. To learn more about the Travel Rule solution, additional information is available.
