Injury struggles escalate for afflicted Twins team as emerging prodigy succumbs to broken arm
Struggling Minnesota Twins, off to a slow start this season, decided to shake things up last week with a surprise call-up for their No. 3 system prospect, 22-year old Luke Keaschall. Ranked as MLB Pipeline's No. 57 overall, while enjoying a solid, but unspectacular Triple-A start with a .727 OPS and a single home run in 14 games, Keaschall was summoned to the major league club following a recovery from Tommy John surgery last summer.
Keaschall set the league ablaze from his very first game, notching an RBI with his maiden at-bat, and swiping second base for good measure. Over seven games in the Twins' lineup, the team displayed some semblance of life, going 3-4. Keaschall showcased impressive batting prowess with seven hits, two doubles, and five walks, resulting in a remarkable 1.065 OPS and .368 batting average.
However, the rookie sensation's happiness was short-lived. In the first inning of a win over the LA Angels, a 87 mph sinker from Kyle Hendricks caught Keaschall on his right forearm. Keaschall remained in the game initially, running the bases, yet was eventually replaced by pinch hitter Mickey Gasper in the third inning due to discomfort.
Following the game, the Twins disclosed Keaschall had suffered a nondisplaced fracture in his right forearm, placing him on the 10-day injured list a day later. Keaschall joins fellow injured players such as 2017 first-round pick Royce Lewis and 2024 All-Star Willi Castro on the injured list. Although the team confirmed no specific timeline for recovery, heal times for comparable injuries are typically between 4–6 weeks.
This unfortunate setback leaves a dent in a struggling Twins roster, with a 10-16 record at the time of Keaschall's injury. To fill the void, the Twins brought in infielder Kody Clemens as a depth player.
As we bid adieu to Keaschall's impressive first stellar week in the Majors, fans and analysts alike eagerly await the return of one of baseball's rising stars.
