Injured Brendan Donovan, Activated Masyn Winn, Demoted Michael Siani for St. Louis Cardinals
Hear Ya! The St. Louis Cardinals Got Some Biz
The St. Louis Cardinals are cookin' up some hit-or-miss roster moves this week as they shuffle around injuries and healthy players. But here's some news that ain't so great: utility man Brendan Donovan popped a rib outta place during the morning grind, benching him for Tuesday's game and putting his Wednesday appearance in question. Manager Oliver Marmol reckons Donovan's not gonna need to hit the injured list, but let's hope this ole rib injury don't turn into its own.
Donovan's been one of baseball's most productive players this season, batting a scorching .356 and raking in 1.3 fWAR with his plate prowess. He's even filled in at second base, shortstop, and left field, making him a versatile asset to the Cardinals. They sure as hell need him in their everyday lineup, so let's keep our fingers crossed that this ribissue don't keep him sidelined for too long.
The news we've been waiting for is the activation of Masyn Winn from the injured list. But, there was a tad of confusion on who was gonna get transferred to Memphis as the corresponding move. Turns out, ol' Michael Siani's the one takin' the bus to Memphis. Marmol hinted that Donovan's injury played a part in this decision. While this might pave the way for Donovan's injured list stint if needed, the real talk is about the club's stance on keeping Thomas Saggese on the roster. They may have kept him even with Donovan in the lineup, but the door's open for them to maybe revisit Siani in the near future.
Siani's primarily been utilized as a late-inning defensive sub and pinch runner, while Saggese's bat's been on fire since getting the call-up a few weeks ago. In 12 games for St. Louis, Saggese's batting stats look like this: .400/.389/.600. He even leads all National League rookies in fWAR. It'd've been a real bummer to see them send him back down to Memphis. But, the good news is Winn's back!! Winn's been warming up at the plate and he knocked two home runs during a rehab game this weekend with Memphis. He'll be slapping leather at shortstop tonight, so welcome back, buddy!
We'll keep you posted on Donovan's status as we get more deets and keep our eyes on that Saggese and Siani roster dynamic as the weeks go by. Stay tuned, folks, ‘cause there's more drama on the horizon in St. Louis!
