Here Comes the Lowdown on Offenbach's Crackdown

Police and authorities brought the heat to Offenbach city center last Wednesday (April 9), diving headfirst into a massive crackdown operation. The primary focus was on commercial businesses, particularly those on Geleitstraße and Berliner Straße. Over 45 individuals were subjected to inspections, and several establishments were found to be in serious violation.

The sweep revealed a wide range of offenses, from gaming machines with technical malfunctions and unobtained permits to more serious infractions. Fire protection received particular scrutiny, with several establishments lacking escape routes, fire extinguishers, or clear access. Hygienic deficiencies were also noted, with one catering establishment being so egregious that the veterinary office was called in.

Other irregularities included violations of the deposit obligation and the Price Indication Act. In one establishment, the police secured illegal e-cigarettes and around 30 kilograms of untaxed tobacco products, initiating a tax evasion procedure. And that's not all; so-called PTB weapons were found in two establishments, although no criminal offenses were discovered.

In a memorable twist, a 31-year-old man was nabbed at a bistro on Geleitstraße, as he was wanted on an open arrest warrant. Additionally, authorities seized approximately one kilogram of marijuana and hashish from another establishment, along with a pepper spray. The investigation into these discoveries has been handed over to the responsible specialist commission.

With numerous infractions coming to light, the police expect the fines to amount to at least €8,000. They view this operation as a clear victory in their ongoing war against illegal structures and efforts to maintain public order in Offenbach.

Hesse's Interior Minister, Prof. Dr. Roman Poseck, made an appearance at the scene, praising the interdisciplinary efforts involved. The public's feedback was positive, and many business owners welcomed the approach, affirming its role in enhancing security and fairness in the business environment.
