In the heart of Neuss, Germany, a significant change is on the horizon. The city's drug counseling center must vacate its current location before a new residential quarter is completed on Augustinusstraße. This development will transform the entire area surrounding the drug counseling center and a nearby kiosk.

The property has already been sold to the GWG, an organisation with plans to build many affordable apartments on the site. This move is part of a broader effort to revitalise the city, focusing on providing affordable housing for its residents.

As the city prepares for this transformation, questions about long-term strategies to address crime and drug-related issues in the city hall area have arisen. While specific details for Neuss are not readily available, general knowledge suggests that German cities, including Neuss, often employ a multi-faceted approach to such problems.

This approach typically includes enhancing police presence and cooperation with federal law enforcement to target organised crime and drug trafficking. Investments in social programs focusing on prevention, education, and rehabilitation are also common, with the aim of reducing drug dependency and recidivism. Urban development measures, such as improved street lighting and video monitoring, are employed to improve public safety and surveillance infrastructure.

Community engagement and outreach to vulnerable groups are also key, as these initiatives help address underlying social issues. Collaboration with health and social services is also crucial for providing integrated support for addicted or at-risk individuals.

For the immediate future, short-term measures are being implemented in the city hall area. These include the installation of an opaque fence around the green area behind the drug counseling center, pruning of the existing trees, and the modernisation of the entire area with better sight lines. The no longer used toilet facility and the old waiting hall are also set to be removed.

The CDU and SPD, Neuss's local political parties, have presented applications for these measures during a recent meeting of the main and security committee. The city hall bus stops are also scheduled for redesign by 2026.

The current situation on the city hall parking lot has significantly improved, according to local leaders, due to the installation of the opaque fence. This measure allows the police on the city hall parking lot to more effectively enforce order with evictions. The fence has been met with approval from the Dorint Hotel and Neuss Marketing, the operator of the city hall, who had previously criticised the current conditions and complained about loss of sales.

Public drug consumption has no place in our city, according to Rolf Retzlaff, the CDU parliamentary group leader. Sven Schumann, the CDU parliamentary group leader, emphasises the commitment of the Christian Democrats to improving the situation around the city hall. SPD faction leader Sascha Karbowiak explained that the goal is to improve the situation for residents through short-term measures and work on an overall strategy with Rhein-Kreis Neuss.

Better lighting in the area around the city hall is also supposed to be implemented, with the aim of enhancing public safety and surveillance. Long-term measures are being demanded, as the city and its political parties work towards a safer and more vibrant Neuss.
