Winter's Chill Grips Germany, West is Milder than East 🇩🇪
Germany's icy grip continues, with meteorologists warning of a northeast-southwest temperature gradient. "Cold and snow remain the order of the day," said a DWD (German Weather Service) meteorologist on Wednesday. While the northeast braces for temperatures between -1°C and -3°C, the southwest enjoys milder weather, boasting temperatures as high as 7°C.
In the northeast, scattered snowfall could reach the lowlands, with up to 5cm of snow expected in the Black Forest and Allgäu regions. In contrast, the southwest faces a slightly wetter, dreary environment. Slippery conditions persist, especially in the northeast and mountainous regions. "By Thursday night, temperatures will plummet across Germany, reintroducing the risk of freezing rain," the meteorologist warned.
Autobahn GmbH, the federal highway authority, maintains an ample supply of gritting materials, ensuring traffic remains unruffled across Germany. Minimal icy incidents are reported so far, with only isolated accidents marring the few quiet nights on German roads.
Hamburg's situation center spokeswoman attributed the relatively normal number of accidents to good driver behavior and the natural tolerance many Germans have for icy road conditions. Bremen experienced a similar situation, reporting a tranquil night despite the fresh snowfall.
Brandenburg weather experts expressed a sense of lucky fortune, suggesting they anticipated more freezing rain than they encountered. Bavaria's police in Upper Bavaria reported a noticeable thaw, clearing the roads of ice and snow.
However, the Deutsche Bahn (German Railways) announced some southern routes would be delayed or affected by cancellations due to the onset of winter weather. Passengers were advised to refrain from traveling beyond Munich until Wednesday evening. Planners are encouraged to shift their journeys to Thursday if travel is unavoidable.
Homelessness presents another challenge during Germany's harsh winter. The situation centers are prepping for an uptick in cold-related homelessness incidents. "The risk of homeless individuals falling victim to the cold grows," said Werena Rosenke, Managing Director of the Federal Working Group for Assistance to the Homeless. The association has geared up its services, deploying cold buses and heated lounges to support the homeless.
