The detention center in Arnstadt, a small town in Thuringia, Germany, officially commenced operations in 2025, marking a significant move for the region. The facility, designed primarily for deportation detention, has been a topic of debate and controversy since its inception [1][2].

The center, located in Erfurt, has recently admitted its first inmates, with two men, a 22-year-old Albanian and a 23-year-old Tunisian, now residing there. The Tunisian man was arrested last Sunday in Nordhausen for breaking the peace, while the Albanian, who was scheduled for deportation as early as April 2024, had previously escaped from a police building and gone into hiding.

The Justice Minister, Beate Meißner, based in Erfurt, announced that both men will remain incarcerated at the detention center until their deportation. The Ministry of Justice, however, has not specified any clear conditions for incarceration at the detention center in the article.

The detention center in Arnstadt is expected to accommodate up to 37 people in the long term. By the end of August, it is expected to house ten individuals.

The opening of the detention center has been met with criticism from the opposition Left party and refugee organizations. The project, which is a joint effort of the state government led by CDU, BSW, and SPD, has sparked concerns and debates about the treatment of deportees and the implications of such a facility on the local community.

Prior to the admission of the two men, the detention center underwent a one-week trial operation. The center was opened for the first time to accommodate its first inmates in August 2025.
