Bonds United: Merz and Trump Squash Trade Tussle Quickly

Initial conversation: Merz and Trump express intent to swiftly resolve trade disagreement

In a move to mend fences, just two days after his swearing-in, Chancellor Friedrich Merz had a chat with the newly-minted US President Donald Trump. Both agreed to nip trade squabbles in the bud and collaborate to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

After their conversation, government spokesman Stefan Kornelius announced that Merz and Trump are keen on swift trade dispute resolution and jointly working towards a peaceful solution in the war-torn Ukraine. President Trump applauded Merz on his inauguration and acknowledged Germany as an indispensable ally and partner, 80 years since the end of World War II.

Merz Rings the Bell for Quick Ukraine Peace

Chancellor Merz and President Trump also decided to join hands to bring an end to the bloodshed in Ukraine. Merz echoed Trump's sentiments and urged an end to the needless bloodshed in Ukraine, proposing that Russia agrees to a ceasefire, paving the way for negotiations. Trump promised to stand by Germany's side, in tandem with France, Britain, Poland, and other European partners, to bring about a lasting peace.

Merz's First Test: A Challenging Debut with Trump

In the past, Merz had brushed off US criticism regarding the German domestic intelligence agency classifying the Alternative for Germany (AfD) as "undoubtedly right-wing extremist." He also advocated for the EU and US to work towards eliminating all tariffs and bolstering mutual recognition of technological standards. "I'd rather avoid slipping into an open trade war," he expressed.

Should a meeting with Trump occur prior to the G7 summit in Canada and the NATO summit, Merz stated that he will liaise closely with French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

While the US continues to impose tariffs on EU steel, aluminum, autos, and other products, the European Commission has proposed countermeasures worth €95-100 billion, targeting US imports such as bourbon whiskey and aerospace giant Boeing, among others. German producers, particularly in export-oriented sectors, are worried about the financial repercussions, having already suffered a 5-10% revenue loss due to existing tariffs.

Both sides recognize the potential for mutually beneficial agreements, with EU Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen expressing hope for "excellent deals" while preparing for all contingencies, including potential retaliation. The ongoing negotiations are delicate, with the EU readying a large-scale retaliatory tariff package but still optimistic about attaining a resolution that avoids further escalation.

In their efforts to end the war in Ukraine, both Germany and the US stand united in their commitment to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and economic stability, though explicit joint diplomatic strategies are not extensively described in recent reports.
