However, after his resignation from royal duties in 2020, Harry was ruled out of the running for the regimental commander position.

The official baton-pass ceremony took place at the Army Aviation Centre in Hampshire in May 2024, with the visit originally planned for January but postponed due to inclement weather.

A Proven Flyboy

William isn't new to the skies, having accrued personal flying experience even before becoming the regimental commander. From 2010 to 2013, he served in the search and rescue unit of the Royal Air Force in Wales. Following that, he worked as a rescue helicopter pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance until 2017, before transitioning fully back into royal duties. Since leaving military service, he hasn't taken on comparable military roles.

King Charles, who had served as the Colonel-in-Chief for 32 years, wholeheartedly praised William's piloting abilities, "The best part is that he's an excellent pilot - that's great to see", as reported by Hello! magazine at the handover ceremony.
