Unleashing the Horror: A Fresh Look at 28 Years Later

It's nearly 28 Years Later, and director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland are diving back into the terrifying world they first introduced in 2002. With the first installment of their trilogy hitting the silver screen next year, the hype is real, but when I was invited for a sneak peek of the film's opening 28 minutes, I couldn't help but feel a smidge of disappointment... until I talked to good ol' Danny Boyle, of course!

Turns out, there may be a reason behind Sony's secrecy about the movie, and it all boils down to a scene that Danny couldn't wait to show us! Now, before I unveil the deets, let's get into what I actually saw during the screening.

Danny Boyle's Eagerness to Show the Whole Shebang

During the screening, I was treated to a taste of what lies ahead in the upcoming horror flick 28 Years Later. Though the opening scenes aren't strikingly different from what we already know, they certainly provide more depth and detail to the plot. Let's dive in and explore what's in store!

A Tantalizing Taste: Horror World-building in its Purest Form

Most of what was displayed in the 28 Years Later sneak peek focused on the Holy Island community and its leadership structure. The presentation started with the entire Teletubbies flashback sequence, where we witness a young boy losing his family to the initial wave of Infected.

Fast-forwarding a bit, we see Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) prepping his buddy, Spike (Alfie Williams), for his first Infected hunt. The ailing Isla (Jodie Comer), on the other hand, is presented as potentially not infected, yet exhibiting symptoms such as anger, fever, and pain.

Lastly, the presentation showcased an interaction between father and son as they encounter two new variants of the Infected: "slow lows" and "Alphas." To put it simply, both operate differently but are solid proof of the Rage Virus' evolution and morphing nature.

As the presentation comes to a close, an Alpha creature does something surprising: it sends out a command: "RUN!" This gripping beginning leaves you yearning for more and, fingers crossed, gets us one step closer to seeing the full film unveiled.

The Mysterious Halt: What's Keeping the Rest Under Wraps?

After chatting with Danny Boyle about both the past and future of the franchise, he shared some insightful tidbits about its history and what's to come. Surprisingly, he hinted at a scene that might be behind the secrecy surrounding the film. According to Danny, this particular scene draws inspiration from a Covid-19 memorial event in London[2]. The shared philosophy with the marketing approach of 28 Days Later suggests that emotional moments might take a backseat in the promotional campaign, much like they did before the original film's theatrical release.

One thing's for sure: with more of Danny Boyle's signature style clearly present, along with Alex Garland's intricate brutality, this film is shaping up to be a terrifying treat. As a die-hard fan, I can't wait to catch the whole ensemble when tickets officially go on sale on June 3. So, stop walking, and start running to get yours!
