Celebrating Sports Culture Across Sverdlovsk Oblast

Sports enthusiasts across the cities of Sverdlovsk Oblast recently celebrated the region's athletic heritage with a series of events and competitions during Sports Day and City Day celebrations. Yekaterinburg, known as a leading sports center in Russia, took the occasion to showcase its extensive sports infrastructure and host numerous competitions.

In Yekaterinburg, City Day, held annually on the third Saturday of August, featured public celebrations with a focus on sports tournaments and exhibitions featuring local athletes and youth participants. The city leveraged its 1728 sports facilities, including stadiums, gyms, and swimming pools, to organise various competitions such as football matches, martial arts tournaments, and mass participation in athletic disciplines.

The events in Yekaterinburg highlighted the city's sports history, including its production of Olympic champions and its role in hosting major events like the 2018 FIFA World Cup matches at the Yekaterinburg Arena.

Elsewhere in the Oblast, cities such as Polevskoy, Verkhnyaya Pyshma, Kachkanar, and Sysert celebrated the Day of Physical Culture with a variety of sports events. In Polevskoy, a grand sports festival included a bicycle race, children's starts, a Swedish relay, cross-country running, family relay, obstacle race, table games, and special "Life with Sports!" fun starts. For the first time in Polevskoy, exciting moped Jimhan competitions were held as part of the celebrations.

In Verkhnyaya Pyshma, a chess tournament was held at the sports school named after A. Kozitsyn, and a bat-and-ball tournament took place at the Metallurg stadium. The winning team in the bat-and-ball tournament was from Nizhny Tagil, second place went to a team from the village of Glinishche in the Rezhsky municipal district, and third place was taken by athletes from Verkhnyaya Pyshma.

In Kachkanar, the main venue of the event was the "Miner" stadium, where races among kindergarten children and city enterprise workers took place, followed by the final of the "KMO Sports Family" competition.

In Sysert, residents celebrated both Sports Day and City Day with a city championship in beach sambo, a chess tournament at the A. Turchaninov library, and numerous sports tournaments in football, volleyball, mass wrestling, basketball, table tennis, and mini-football.

In Nizhny Tagil, over 400 people participated in the 26th open city championship in 3x3 basketball, an ice hockey tournament, a sailing regatta, a chess game, and a city championship in beach sambo were also held.

In Bobrovsky, a sports festival brought together residents of all ages. A total of 168 people in 42 teams participated in the competitions.

The events held across the cities of Sverdlovsk Oblast not only provided recreational activities for residents but also served as qualifiers for regional and interregional contests, fostering youth participation and connecting local athletes to larger tournaments. The celebrations further emphasised the region’s sports heritage and its commitment to promoting an active and healthy lifestyle among its residents.

  4. The "Miner" stadium in Kachkanar hosted races for kindergarten children and city workers, as well as the final of the "KMO Sports Family" competition, reflecting the region's emphasis on sports culture and family involvement.
  5. In Sysert, both Sports Day and City Day celebrations featured a city championship in beach sambo, numerous sports tournaments in different disciplines like football, volleyball, basketball, and table tennis, and a chess tournament at the A. Turchaninov library, promoting sports-betting and sports-analysis among residents.
