Renowned German author Ingo Schulze will take up the 39th Bamberg Poetry Professorship in the summer semester of 2026. The position is one of the most prestigious literary honours in the German-speaking world. Schulze, known for works like 33 Moments of Happiness, follows in the footsteps of writers such as Jenny Erpenbeck and Alina Bronsky.

Born in Dresden, Schulze studied in Jena before establishing himself as a leading voice in contemporary German literature. His debut novel, 33 Moments of Happiness, was published in 1995 and brought him widespread acclaim. Since 2023, he has also served as president of the German Academy for Language and Literature.

During his tenure in Bamberg, the 63-year-old will present his latest novel, The Water in August, at the E.T.A. Hoffmann Theater on May 6, 2026. The event will mark one of his first public appearances in the role. No successor for the 40th Bamberg Poetry Professor, set to begin in summer 2027, has yet been announced.

Schulze's appointment reinforces the Bamberg Poetry Professorship's reputation for hosting influential literary figures. His new novel and upcoming public readings will be key highlights of his term. The professorship continues to serve as a platform for major voices in German literature.
