Ingeborg Bachmann's Legacy Celebrated in a Unique Literary Event

A special reading event will celebrate the life and work of Ingeborg Bachmann, one of the most influential German-language writers of the 20th century. On March 29, the Salzstadel will host a performance featuring her poetry and prose, accompanied by live piano music. Bachmann, known for her fierce intellect and emotional depth, left a lasting mark on literature, feminism, and culture.

Bachmann was born in 1926 and became a central figure in post-war German literature. Her works included radio plays, poetry collections like Die gestundete Zeit and Anrufung des Großen Bären, and the acclaimed novel Malina. She also wrote the widely studied prose piece Undine geht, part of Das dreißigste Jahr. Beyond writing, she worked as a journalist and dramatist while living in cities like Vienna, Berlin, Munich, Zurich, and Rome.

Her life was as intense as her work. She struggled with financial instability, anxiety, and sleepless nights, all while maintaining passionate relationships and a relentless creative drive. Today, her legacy endures through the prestigious Ingeborg Bachmann Prize, one of the most respected literary awards in the German-speaking world. The upcoming event at the Salzstadel begins at 11:30 AM, with doors opening at 11:00. Actor Oliver Karbus will read selections of Bachmann's poetry and short prose, accompanied by pianist Martin Kubetz. Tickets are available at the venue's box office for twelve euros.

The reading series offers a chance to experience Bachmann's powerful words in a new setting. Her works, from Malina to her poetry, continue to resonate with audiences decades later. The event highlights her enduring influence on literature and thought.
