In the summer of 2018, a significant turning point in one refugee's life began with a discarded cigarette. This chance encounter would lead to a series of warm welcomes and acts of kindness that would forever change the author's perspective on humanity and the true meaning of welcome culture.
The author, along with their family, arrived in Germany on October 19, 2015, after months of grueling travel. The first day was long and exhausting, filled with registration, medical examinations, and waiting in crowded halls. Despite the unfamiliar surroundings, the author felt a sense of warmth and respect from the strangers they encountered.
Upon arriving at their new accommodation, the dining hall was prepared for dinner, and the employees extended warm welcomes and offered soft blankets. The large, warm, and inviting hall provided the author with a sense of security and comfort for the first time.
The author was not on the list for accommodation, but a volunteer group warmly welcomed them into a home. As days turned into weeks, the author found a community that not only protected them but also made them aware that their story matters.
One of the most significant encounters was with the team or community members of Germany's 'Willkommenskultur.' These compassionate individuals offered the author Muna a new accommodation and later involved her as part of a community that provided her protection and solidarity.
The author's experience of welcome culture was not about official speeches, celebrations, or grand words, but about small gestures. A stranger surprised the author by calling them 'Germans' in 2018, making the author feel a sense of belonging. Another stranger referred to the Merkel government as 'our government' in a pub conversation in an implied inclusive manner.
The refugee crisis of 2015 is still a significant issue today, with questions about border controls, integration, and the AfD remaining relevant. The author found strength in groups advocating for migrant rights during their toughest fight against imminent deportation.
Today, the author is an active member of Welcome United (WCU) and is proud to be part of the team organizing the 'Caravan' this year. The author's story serves as a testament to the power of welcome culture and the impact it can have on individuals and communities alike.

Through this project, the author hopes to continue advocating for the rights of refugees and promoting the importance of welcome culture. The author's experience reinforces the true meaning of humanity and welcome culture, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, there is always room for kindness and compassion.
