As the summer break rolls in for the "Crime Scene," so too does the "Police Squad" take a breather. Ross and Luschke are on the trail in Poland, hot on the heels of a brutal murder in the shadow of the UEFA European Football Championship - all wrapped up in the tense drama of "Game Against the Ball."

The Scene of the Crime

The lifeless body of Olivia Briegel, the fiercely ambitious CEO of a construction company, is found within the walls of a Polish scaffolding firm in Kostrzyn. A German casualty on Polish soil, an awkward situation already. For Vincent Ross (André Kaczmarczyk) and Alexandra Luschke (Gisa Flake), the duo from Brandenburg, the victim's associates prove to be a tough nut to crack in the investigation. In-house rivalry between Patryk Dobosz (Albert Talski) and Jakub Sobinski (Adrian Topol) threatens to derail the case, each accusing the other of the crime in a bid to seize control of the company.

The tangled web only gets more complicated at the nearby football club, where Briegel served as president. Wielding influence but lacking knowledge, she was an imposing figure, particularly when it came to her volatile son, Marco (Len Blankenberg). The boy struggles to cope, with a social worker on speed-dial, while Luschke digs for information. And then there are Marco's teammates, Robert (Lauri Kröck) and Kevin (Franz Ferdinand Krause), both harboring hopes of making it as professional footballers, yet almost convinced that the road may be rockier than they think.

The Heart of the Story

There's a rich tapestry of themes unfolding here, setting the stage for the unfolding drama. Toxic relationships, hidden scars, all against the backdrop of amateur football. Director Christian Werner: "Back in my village, there was a children's home filled with challenging youngsters from Berlin. They were simply children sent away by overwhelmed parents, relocated to Thuringia following the Wende. When they were integrated into my village's school, it caused intense conflict, yet we had to play in the same football team. In time, our diverse squad became one of the best teams in the league. I believe that's a successful example of integration."

The Climactic Moment

With the summer break looming, so too does the final "Police Squad" episode before a long hiatus. In all honesty, switching off during this tense thriller isn't much of an option. "Game Against the Ball," co-written and directed by Michael Fetter Nathansky, Daniel Bickermann, and Christian Werner, creates an unstoppable sense of tension from the very start. Even those who aren't fans of football on the pitch should stick around.

The Astonishing Aspect

Quite a punch, particularly because the dysfunctional home fronts, both big and small, don't receive a clean resolution here. The drama instead springs from the narrative fluidity, with the trio of young footballers delivering impressive performances, and the detective duo avoiding the pitfalls of ironic banter despite the gravity of the case.

The Rating

9 out of 10 - an atmospheric tour de force, a stellar cast, and suspense that lasts until the very end.

While the specific German series "Game Against the Ball" isn't directly linked to another popular show, it seems to share elements with the English-language series "Ballard," a spin-off from the acclaimed "Bosch" and "Bosch: Legacy." Although there's no direct comparison between the two, the relevant information focuses on the "Ballard" series, which revolves around Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) and her tireless efforts to solve the cold cases that the LAPD has overlooked. The series uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the department and highlights themes such as justice, relentlessness, legacy, personal trauma, and institutional challenges[2][3][4].
