"Chief of War," a captivating Hawaiian historical drama series, has made its debut on Apple TV+. This nine-episode series, co-created, executive produced, and starring Jason Momoa, offers an unique indigenous perspective on the unification and colonization of Hawaii.

The show follows the story of Kaʻiana, a warrior chief of Kauaʻi, played by Momoa. Kaʻiana ventures outside the Hawaiian Islands, returns home, and becomes embroiled in a bloody campaign during the unification of Hawaiʻi from 1782 to 1810 under Kamehameha I. However, he ultimately rebels against the unification.

The main cast includes a predominantly Polynesian ensemble, with notable performances from Luciane Buchanan as Kaʻahumanu, Temuera Morrison as Chief Kahekili (guest star), and Moses Goods as Moku.

Filming for "Chief of War" began in Hawaii, with the first location being the breathtaking landscapes of the islands. The production later moved to New Zealand in January 2023. Doug Jung serves as the showrunner for this intriguing series.

"Chief of War" is a personal project for Jason Momoa, who was born in Nānākuli, Honolulu, Hawaii, to a Native Hawaiian father and a white mother from Iowa. He considers the show his "baby" and his "dream."

The series premiered on August 1, 2025, with the first two episodes, followed by weekly releases every Friday through September 19, 2025. Around 600 local residents were hired for the local production in Hawaii.

"Chief of War" is produced by FIFTH SEASON and Chernin Entertainment for Apple TV+, marking another successful collaboration between these production companies. This gripping drama series promises to captivate audiences with its rich storytelling and authentic portrayal of Hawaiian history.
