Gurugram, India - Social media content creator Sharmishta Panoli, a 22-year-old law student from Pune, has been arrested for allegedly posting a video on Operation Sindoor, a military response to the Pahalgam terror attack, that sparked widespread criticism and outrage online. Hindustan Times reported this development on Friday.
Panoli's controversial Instagram video questioned the silence of Bollywood celebrities regarding Operation Sindoor, a move that many found to be politically charged. The video was subsequently deleted, and she issued a public apology. However, an FIR (First Information Report) had been filed in Kolkata prior to her apology, with several attempts made to send legal notices to Panoli and her family.
The now-deleted video sparked a wave of criticism, with Panoli being accused of promoting hate speech and receiving threatening messages in the comment section. Following the backlash, a court issued an arrest warrant, leading to her detention in Gurugram.
According to the authorities, Panoli was charged under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). Following her arrest, she was reportedly whisked away to Kolkata on transit remand.
Panoli had built a significant online presence prior to her arrest, with over 94,000 followers on Instagram. In a now-deleted apology, she emphasized that she never intended to hurt sentiments with her remarks. During the controversy, she also made her Instagram account private.
