Infidelity in Magdeburg's Legislative Assembly
In a significant development, authorities in Magdeburg have launched a probe into the suspected embezzlement of funds by parliament members from the CDU, SPD, and AfD parties in Saxony-Anhalt. The investigation was initiated following a complaint from the Federation of Taxpayers in November 2023 and was reopened after the Taxpayers' Association appealed when the initial investigation was dismissed.
The search operations, authorised by the Magdeburg District Court and carried out with the State Criminal Police Office, aim to gather documentation related to the disputed allowances that were reportedly paid without legal entitlement. Spokespersons from the AfD acknowledged the investigation but did not provide additional details, while an anonymous source from another parliamentary faction indicated the primary intent is to uncover records of the payments in question.
The AfD faction has documented 25,600 euros in additional payments for "special functions within the faction" in 2021, while the SPD faction accounted for 7,500 euros in similar payments during the same period. The CDU faction, on the other hand, paid additional allowances to its deputy faction leaders, deputy parliamentary business managers, and working group leaders, amounting to several hundred euros per month. However, no additional payments for functional allowances were shown in the financial reports for either 2021 or 2022 for all other factions.
The investigation is particularly concerning due to potential implications for the involved parties. Findings of financial misconduct might lead to legal consequences for individuals and reputational damage for the CDU, SPD, and AfD, impacting their political standing and public trust. The investigation highlights increased scrutiny on parliamentary financial practices and could prompt broader calls for transparency and reform within these parties.
However, no further details on charges or outcomes have yet been disclosed. Co-faction leader Oliver Kirchner of the AfD faction considers the investigation as disproportionate, while the SPD faction supports the investigations of the public prosecutor's office and has abolished the allowances for deputy faction chairmen since the beginning of the eighth legislative period.
Ralf Seibicke, the chairman of the Federation of Taxpayers in Saxony-Anhalt, expressed satisfaction with the investigations, emphasising the importance of upholding the integrity of parliamentary financial practices. The Higher Regional Court in Naumburg has ordered a renewed review of the Magdeburg public prosecutor's office proceedings, partially overturning their previous decision. The evaluation of the seized documents will take some time.
