Doctors at the hospital where she was rushed confirm that her condition is critical due to severe breathing problems caused by dirt in her mouth and nose, as well as signs of oxygen deprivation, insect bites, and animal bites.
This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the prevalence of female infanticide in India, particularly in poorer communities. The tradition, which has led to India having a high male surplus, is still common as late as 2025.
Women are often discriminated against in Indian society, and it is common for girls to be aborted before birth or for infanticide to occur after birth. The birth of a girl is often seen as a financial burden, leading to the horrific practice of burying newborn girls alive.
However, efforts are being made to combat this issue. The Indian government and various NGOs like the Ministry of Women and Child Development and organizations such as the NARI Shakti initiative work tirelessly to raise awareness, implement legal measures banning sex-selective abortions, and promote the value of the girl child.
