Industries in Mannheim industrial sector engulfed in flames with structures towering several meters high ablaze
In the heart of Mannheim, a fire has been burning in the industrial harbor since early Friday morning. The blaze, which has consumed piles of car parts and plastic up to ten meters high, has been attended by approximately 100 firefighters.
The fire department has been working tirelessly to extinguish the last remaining embers, with the expectation of completing the work by 7:05 PM on Friday afternoon. Despite the smoke from the fire drifting into the northern city areas, no health-endangering values were detected in the air quality measurements in the northern Mannheim area.
The Mayor of Mannheim, Volker Proffen, praised the emergency services for their work, expressing his sincere thanks to each and every firefighter involved. The water supply for extinguishing was ensured as it was directly at the harbor basin, and a fire-fighting boat was in operation on the water.
The smoke from the fire has been detectable as far away as Frankfurt and parts of southern Hesse. However, the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance has warned of odor nuisances in the districts of Bergstraße, Groß-Gerau, Darmstadt, and Frankfurt.
As of now, the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage remain uncertain. The police could not initially provide information on these matters, and a search of available search results did not yield any confirmed information about the cause or damage of a large fire at the Mannheim industrial harbor scrapyard.
The wind, blowing eastward, could have made the smoke smell noticeable in the Rhine-Neckar district throughout the day. Despite this, the firefighters were using turntable ladders to extinguish the meter-high flames, working their way through an area of 50 by 50 meters, with several large scrap piles on fire.
The scrap piles, reportedly around ten meters high and mainly consisting of car parts and plastic, have been a challenge for the firefighters. However, with their unwavering determination and the support of the community, they are making progress in bringing the fire under control. The emergency services continue their efforts to ensure the safety of the city and its residents.
