A grisly discovery in Meghalaya has shaken the northeastern state after the body of a newlywed man was found in a deep gorge, over a week since he and his wife went missing during their honeymoon trip. Raja Raghuvanshi, a businessman hailing from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, met a violent end, with police suspecting foul play and launching a thorough investigation.

On Tuesday, the Meghalaya Police, led by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), revealed that they had recovered a machete, the alleged murder weapon, and Raja's phone from the vicinity of the discovery site. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem confirmed that the deceased was brutally slain and categorically stated, "There is no doubt that the man was murdered."

The couple, who were on their honeymoon, went missing on May 23. They arrived in the picturesque Nongriat village a day earlier and were last seen checking out of Shipara Homestay. Their rented scooty was found abandoned at Sohrarim the following day. Tragically, Raja's lifeless body was found on Monday, with the aid of a drone, inside the gorge below the Weisawdong Parking Lot at Riat Arliang. The whereabouts of Sonam, Raja's wife, remain unknown, as the police continue their search.

"Tomorrow, we will intensify our search in the same area and in the adjoining areas. The gorge extends quite a distance - nearly one to two kilometers - and it's aligned with the current site of recovery. Our priority right now is to find Sonam Raghuvanshi," the SP said.

Raja's family, desperate for answers, has demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). "His body was found 25 kilometers away from where the vehicle was parked. We suspect that he was kidnapped and taken to Weisawdong falls. It's impossible for my brother and his wife to die by suicide. Local police are not ready to listen to us when we say it's a case of kidnapping, looting and murder," the victim's brother Vipin Raghuvanshi asserted.

The couple's family had earlier offered a reward of Rs 5 lakh to anyone who can provide information on their whereabouts. State Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh expressed shock over the incident, urging the public not to jump to conclusions and wait for the police to complete their probe.

Amidst growing concerns among tourists, Mr. Lyngdoh stated: "We cannot jump the gun. We will ensure the guilty is charged. Law will take its course. As far as safety in the tourism sector is concerned, if a man goes missing in Thailand, it does not mean Thailand is unsafe for tourists."

Last week, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma confirmed that he was "personally monitoring" the administration and police's efforts to trace the couple. Multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and a Special Operations Team, are involved in the ongoing search for Sonam.

Sources within the state government have suggested that the matter is being probed by the top brass. As the search for Sonam continues, the tragic case of Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife, Sonam, remains unsolved, leaving their families and friends waiting for answers.

Additional Insights:- The couple had been staying at the Nongriat village in East Khasi Hills district, best known for the double-decker root bridge and breathtaking waterfalls.- Raja's body was identified by a tattoo, and the postmortem examination confirmed injuries consistent with a sharp object, such as a machete or tree-cutting tool, indicating a violent end.- The last known contact with Sonam was a voice message she sent to Raja's mother the day they went missing, where she sounded short of breath and mentioned trekking to a waterfall.- A black raincoat, possibly belonging to Sonam, was found near a viewpoint with a suspicious stain, though it has not been confirmed as blood.- Raja's family has written to the Prime Minister and the Meghalaya Chief Minister demanding a CBI investigation, fearing a cover-up or inadequate local response.
