Indore Council Grants Approval for Anwar Qadri's Discharge from Office
In the city of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, local Congress councillor Anwar Qadri is facing disqualification proceedings due to serious allegations of funding "love jihad." Qadri has been absconding since the allegations surfaced.
The Mayor-in-Council (MiC) of Indore approved a proposal recommending Qadri's disqualification on August 5, 2025. The proposal will be tabled in the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) council meeting for approval. Qadri will be given an opportunity to be heard before the final decision.
The controversy stems from two men, Sahil Sheikh and Altaf Shah, who admitted in June that Qadri had given them ₹3 lakh to convert girls. Both men were arrested in separate cases of alleged rape. The allegations have led to a bounty of ₹20,000 being put on Qadri, who remains at large.
The MiC believes that Qadri's acts have lowered the dignity of a corporator's post. In addition, a letter was written to the Commissioner (Revenue) of Indore Division on June 20, requesting Qadri's dismissal as a corporator under the Madhya Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 1956.
As many as 18 criminal cases are registered against Qadri in different police stations of the city. Qadri is also an accused in an alleged "love jihad" case.
In other news, the IMC announced the approval of various development works. The AMRUT 2.0 scheme, including financial approval for the fourth phase of Narmada and sewage projects worth ₹322.38 crore, has been announced. Construction of smart toilets at 25 locations is planned under the DBFOT model, with 15 years of operations and maintenance. The proposal will be tabled in the IMC council meeting for approval.
Additionally, cement concrete road construction from Tulsi Nagar Pulia to Nipania has been approved. Various works under the Indore water supply system, including SCADA-based water management, are being undertaken. Sewer chamber strengthening and storm water line work have been included in the plans. A GIS survey of properties within municipal limits has also been approved through a designated agency.
