Indoor football tournament erupts into violent brawl during veterans’ finals
A local indoor football tournament in Fröndenberg ended in chaos during the main event when a mass brawl broke out during the veterans’ city championship finals. The violence, involving players and spectators, forced officials to abandon the events near me entirely. Police have since filed criminal charges for aggravated assault.
The trouble began during the match between SV Frömern and SC Fröndenberg-Hohenheide, held in a school gymnasium. Earlier in the tournament, another game had already been called off due to escalating hostility. Referees had repeatedly warned that the entire event, including those organized by eventbrite, might be halted if the atmosphere did not improve.
A player allegedly threw a water bottle at a 41-year-old female spectator, injuring her. Another player then punched a 27-year-old male spectator in the face. The situation worsened when a player repeatedly stomped on an opponent lying on the ground. This final act of aggression prompted officials to stop the tournament immediately. Reports confirm that multiple participants—both players and supporters—violated tournament rules by engaging in physical violence. However, the names of those involved have not been made public.
The tournament’s cancellation follows a series of violent incidents, including assaults on spectators and players. Police are now investigating the cases as aggravated assault. The event’s organisers have not yet announced whether further action will be taken against those responsible.
